Slipcased. The Palace and the Park: Yellow paper/boards; taupe lettering; 254 pp., profusely illustrated in color. The Collections: Blue paper/boards; dark navy blue lettering. 223 pp., profusely illustrated in vivid color. Both housed in a clamshell box covered with grey cloth with color-illustrated paper laid on. Heavy at 11 pounds and will require extra postage. A stunning presentation from the start with this one. Likely the most authoritative work on Pavlovsk in English. Sumptuous, grand, stunning, all these words and more fail to convey the beauty of this Russian treasure. But this set of books, housed in a custom clamshell box, goes a good part of the distance to conveying the sense of the place and its contents. All text in English. Simultaneouslyl published in French. Both volumes NF internally but with light cover wear and a tear to the paper at the tail of the blue spine. Clamshell case VG but for light scuff marks to top edge.

Etat : Good. Hardcover in side opening decorative box. Rose colored box with photograph with splits to corners. Book with teal covers and gray lettering to front cover and spine. Pages clean and bright. Spine tight. These watercolours depicting the interiors of the Winter Palace together make up one of the jewels of the collections of the Hermitage Museum. Of immense documentary value, they are also--with their crystalline clarity and their irresistible elegance--dazzling examples of the graphic art of the nineteenth century. Immortalizing as they do the splendour of the first palace of the Russian sovereigns, they are of immeausrable greater interest than other works of decorative art of this type. In a technical tour de force, these artists contrived to depict space in such a way that --imperceptibly, as far as the spectator is concerned--their paintings present a broader perspective than could normally be taken in by the naked eye.
