For half a century his name has been a household word; his works, treasured possessions; his pictured contribution to Cape history, unique. Yet the man himself remained an unsolved riddle. But now, at long last, the curtain has been pulled aside. . The unique catalogue of 259 extant original paintings forms an important part of the book. . Among the 146 paintings illustrated are pictures of Mauritius, of Natal, of the Eastern Province and of places like Swellendam, Malagas, Graaff Reinet and many other historical South African towns.".
