Card Covers. Etat : Good to Very Good. First Edition. 1966. xii, 136pp. "This little book deals with Irish syllabic verse of the period in which the greater part of the surviving dán direach was composed, a period which may be roughly defined by the end of the twelfth century and the beginning of the seventeenth. . In the verse of this period we find a prosody more elaborate and rigid than that of most of the surviving Middle Irish lyrical verse, and therefore, as well as for linguistic reasons, it demands separate treatment. The syllabic system had probably been perfected, though not stereotyped, early in the tenth century. The metrical and grammatical system which we find all over Ireland in the fourteenth century was probably adopted for general use as the result of some reforming movement such as that which took place in Wales in the middle of the fifteenth. . To illustrate the metres described I have added a number of short poems and extracts, chosen mainly as simple and readable specimens of the metres they exemplify". Shelf wear to spine and edges. Book in very good condition but there are pencil notes pp. 21-48.

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good Plus. Reprint. 1978. 86pp. "For nearly a thousand years Irish classical poetry, commonly called "bardic poetry" included the highest achievements of irish literature. Here Professor Knott gives a description of it which is expertly informed as well as clear and concise. Dr. Eleanor Knott, Lecturer in Celtic Languages and later Professor of Early Irish in Trinity College, Dublin, has written many works on early Irish literature." The book is in excellent condition with light bumping to the spine ends and corners. There is a slight lean to the top end of the spine, but contents are tight, clean and complete.
