Gorgeous edition of Emerson's essays, which he wrote during his most fertile period, 1830s-1840s, complemented throughout with the brilliant woodcuts of Hans Alexander Mueller. Hardcover small 4to (6.25" x 10.75") has a black cloth-wrapped spine lettered & decorated in teal & gilt, with decorative yellow & cream paper over boards, housed in a protective sturdy cardboard slipcase. 314 pp. No date, c. 1970s. Condition is Near Fine, marred only by a tiny ding to fore edge side of front board. Else, completely clean, feels never opened! Binding tight & square, creamy white vellum-like pages are unmarked. The slipcase shows moderate fading to upper half all around. Front paper pastedown is bright & clear with crisp edges, but slightly toned to top edges as well.
