DERNIERE EDITION, beaucoup augmentee, revue, corigee et enrichie de tailles-douces. 1685, printed in Holland, much enlarged, revised and corrected, in 2 parts, the second part with its own title page, French text, 12mo, approximately 140 x 80 mm, 5½ x 3 inches, engraved additional pictorial title page divided into compartments showing a kitchen, gardening, an artist's studio, and the laboratory of an alchemist, plus 8 ENGRAVED PLATES by A. Schoonebeek, pages: [10], 1-398, [40]; [2], 441-648, followed by 16 pages of tables, bound in full antique speckled calf, expertly rebacked to match, raised bands with blind rules, gilt lettered red morocco label, all edges speckled red. Covers very slightly worn, slight wear to corners, small bookplate on front pastedown, small piece torn from 1 lower margin, white line to 1 plate (printing flaw), contents very clean, binding tight and firm. A very good copy . First published in Paris in 1674 with the title "Recueil de curiositez rares et nouvelles." also as a 12mo but with only 394 pages, it is attributed by most libraries and reference books to French apothecary and physician Nicolas Lemery (1645-1715) but by some to Antoine Joseph Emery. It covers a great range of "secrets" including cookery cooking recipes and the conservation of meat and fish, fruit, flowers, wine and vinegar, recipes for cosmetics and perfumes, for the preservation of health and treatment of ailments and diseases, hints on household matters, gardening, hunting and fishing, instructions for painting and gilding wood, pottery and furniture, for casting in plaster or bronze, for counterfeiting marble, plus a small section on fireworks with an illustration.
