This uncommon book was published "in a small and private edition . . . to gratify Mrs. Straiton's and her daughter Emma's friends, who followed them, only in part, through their letters in The Flushing Journal" (Preface). The letters, with commentary by Emma, relate their 1880 journey from America to Britain and onwards to India via the Suez Canal; an ensuing visit to the Holy Land, Turkey and Greece; and a continuation through Italy into Austria, the Tyrol, and Switzerland, through France to Britain, Ireland, and home. The account includes details of their visits the to the Passion Play at Oberammergau, and to Chamonix and Mont Blanc.

THE BOOK WAS PRIVATELY PUBLISHED BY THE EVENING JOURNAL PRESS FOR JOHN STRAITON IN 1881. THE BOOK WAS BASED ON LETTERS WHICH THE TWO WOMEN HAD SENT HOME DURING THEIR TRIP; MANY OF WHICH HAD BEEN PUBLISHED IN THE "FLUSHING JOURNAL".
