Many people are fascinated by their elegant beauty and their secretive way of life, while others fear and loathe them. Snakes have always played an important part in our heritage of popular legends and folktales, in myth and religious ritual. They are looked upon as symbols of wisdom or of evil, revered as deities or ruthlessly hunted down. But what are snakes really like? Feelings of distaste stem largely from a lack of knowledge about these predominantly harmless creatures. Modern methods of investigation have substantially extended the store of information available on snakes. If we consider them objectively, we soon realize that, in biological terms, snakes are extremely interesting animals. With more than 2,500 species, they have not only succeeded in colonizing almost all regions of the earth, but at the same time have come to terms with the most varied of environmental conditions. Today, for example, we recognize some 700 species with an area of distribution stretching from the Arctic Circle to beyond 40° latitude south. Within this area, snakes inhabit the most diverse of ecological regions, to which they have adapted by means of a wide variety of special anatomical and physiological features. SNAKES: Biology, Behavior and Relationship to Man introduces the most important and interesting representatives of this vast group of animals. A fully illustrated text describes their evolution, anatomy, physiology, behavior, diversity and systematic classification. Special sections discuss matters such as the history of snake catching and snake trading, snake bites and treatments, snake charmers and historical lore, including such legends as the Serpent of Eden, and the Feathered Serpent.
