Katharinas dramatische Werke, Erinnerungen, auch polemische Schriften und Bauprojekte sowie poetische Texte Rostopcinas und Cvetaevas werden auf die Repräsentation einer gestürzten Herrscherin hin untersucht. In Sof'ja sahen Katharina, Rostopcina und Cvetaeva den Ausgangspunkt für eine alternative Geschichte eines besseren, toleranteren und humaneren russischen Staates, der vor allem auch (schreibenden) Frauen Gleichberechtigung gewährt und würdevolle Existenz zugebilligt hätte. Insofern werden die untersuchten Imaginationen Sof'jas als spezifisch weibliche russische Utopien verstanden.
