Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Second Edition,. second edition, altered and enlarged, blue cloth, spine gilt lettering faded, text block clean, tight and sound, illustrated, an unread copy, as the pages are mostly uncut. Though the main text is dated 1889, this must be a later binding, as it includes a 60-page appendix containing three further chapters dated 1891, two dealing with criticisms aired when the book first appeared, the other giving an account of later experimentation. This is the first textbook on geophysics. Fisher was the second person to put forward the theory of continental drift (plate tectonics), following Von Humboldt's speculations almost a century earlier. Fisher argued on a more scientific basis but his fate, like all others who argued the case until the 1960s, was to be either ridiculed or ignored. Less scientifically, he speculated that the Moon was formed from material knocked out of the Pacific Ocean. Very scarce. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
