Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. Dore, Gustav (illustrateur). Circa 1880s. Green boards with black decorations and gold letters. Gold owl in a tree on the front. Pages have gilt edges. Light scuffing to covers, interior looks exceptional. Back board has a large whitened area on the outer board. It looks like someone attempted to clean the book, but took the color off instead. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Reprint, published ca. 1870. A large, thick volume richly illustrated with drawings & decorations by Gustave Dore. Cloth binding is elaborately decorated with gilt lettering, rules & illustrations on the front cover and the spine. All edges of the book block gilt. Condition: front cover is detached; binding worn & faded with minor fraying to edges; corners bumped. Different paper stocks were used for the pages & consequently, some of the pages are age-toned. Else a good copy. Pages: 839 plus publisher's catalogue.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 175pp. Quarto [29.5cm]. Rebound in modern tan leatherette. Title stamped in gilt on spine and front board. Additionally, the front board is decorated with a large blind stamped illustration of a lyre. Very light soiling to boards. Textblock is toned. Sporadic closed tears throughout have been unprofessionally backed with tape. Gutter also occasionally reinforced with tape. Heavily illustrated with elaborate wood engravings by Gustave Doré.

Very Thick Royal 4to. 479pp. Profuse 320 wonderful illustrations by the great Gustave Dore based on steel engravings, and including full page, head and tail pieces. Very good condition, clean tight sound square, no bookplate, inscription or ownership marks of any kind, the very lightest of sporadic fosing to endpapers not intruding in the least, crisp edges. Bound in bright gilt embossed blue cloth boards. Housed and protected in original unclipped, Dore illustrated dustwrapper with closed tear 1 else very good condition. Huge and heavy volume, may incur additional postage possibly prohibitive overseas. A great addition to the library of reader and scholar alike.

With three hundred and twenty illustrations. The fables of Jean de La Fontaine, a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the seventeenth century. His fables have provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and beyond. This collection includes titles such as: the Lion and the Rat, the Weasel in the Granary, the Miser who Lost his Treasure, the Horse and the Wolf, the Hen with the Golden Eggs, and many others. Translated by Walter Thornbury, an English journalist, biographer, historian, and translator. Illustrated by Gustave Dore, a French printmaker, illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings illustrating classic literature. In the original cream paper covered boards. Externally, excellent. Original unclipped dust wrapper is very smart with light shelf wear only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Fine. book.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Thick 4to hardcover volume in green gold embossed cloth boards. Spine and boards tight and complete with minimal wear. A little bumping to top corners. At some point the front endpaper and portrait of La Fontaine came loose and were glued to the front board a little off kilter. Other than that the contents are very clean and tight with no water marks or foxing. A nice solid copy with tons of Dore illustrations full page. 733 pages total.1880's.

Antique book with pictorial green cloth. Hardcover decorated in black and gilt.p> Measures 11" x 9" and has 557 pages. Folio edition of Jean De La Fontaine's Fables with over 85 full size illustrations plus many smaller engravings by Gustave Dore Book has cover loose from the book, but inside contents solid. Front blank end papers loose from the book, very brittle. Pages are somewhat yellowed. Cover has edge wear.

Illustrated throughout with in-text and full-page woodcuts by Gustave Doré (all included in the pagination). Original publisher's pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and black. 28.5 x 22.5 cm. Very good. Short tears to spine ends and head of rear joint; corners worn. The hinges are partially cracked and tender, and the text block has dropped, but both covers are holding fairly well for such a large and heavy volume. The leaves are a trifle age-toned but, aside from a few minor traces of marginal soiling, the volume is clean throughout. A bright and attractive copy. Later edition in a beautiful example of publisher's cloth.

Hardcover. Etat : Fair. ; Green cloth cover with gilt and black stamped design is frayed at corners and spine caps with general wear and soiling. Boards and spine are straight. Backstrip has been somewhat crudely reglued with abrasions from old tape repairs to end sheets and paste downs. Frontispiece protected by tissue. 2" old tape repair to tile page. Pages are toned with modest sparse thumbing but overall quite clean and very good. Profusely illustrated in b&w.

Boards lightly stained, front matter lightly foxed, pages 25-32 and 49-120 darker than the rest (these editions often used different paper stock that toned at different rates). 1887 Full-Leather. lxiv, 839, [3] pp. Royal 4to. 12 3/4 x 10. Leather boards with gilt decorative borders, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. Translated into English verse by Walter Thornbury, with 86 full-page engraved illustrations and numerous vignettes by Gustave Dore throughout. First published between 1668 and 1693, the Fables of La Fontaine rank among the masterpieces of French literature. This edition includes all the fables (nearly 250), as well as An Essay on the Life and Works of Jean de la Fontaine, The Life of Aesop, the Phrygian, a dedication to Monseigneur the Dauphin, a preface, and a poem addressed to Monseigneur the Dauphin.
