This unique collection comprises over 200 items, mostly correspondence between the Irish Free State Football Association, later The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and other international football Associations, players and Club secretaries & other staff of clubs in Ireland & Britain. From the period November 1930-January 1932 there's 32 items including correspondence from the Federacion Espanola de Futbol and the Football Association of the Irish Free State regarding the first ever match international played between the teams on April 26th, 1931 in Barcelona with a reciprocal game held in Dublin on December 14th of that year.Other items include letters from Glasgow Celtic, Cardiff City, Norwich City, Football Association of Wales in response to requests for the release by the clubs and the Association of Peter Kavanagh, Thomas Farquharson, Mick O'Brien respectively. Included is a handwritten signed letter from Farquharson from his Cardiff address accepting the captaincy of the team for the first game away to Spain and thanking them for honour. At one stage he was a member of the IRA and was arrested for taking down Wanted posters and ended up in Mountjoy jail. He was only released when he said he would leave Ireland. He did so and ended up in SOuth Wales.There is also correspondence from League of Ireland clubs including one from Shamrock Rovers with a list of their players willing to play in the game if selected. This signed Jas. Fox. A TLS letter from Joe Wickham on Bohemians letterhead confirms availability of Dalymount Park for the return match v. Spain in Dec. 1931. P.J. Hickey Secretary of Dolphin Football Club, Dolphin's Barn, Dublin provides a list of eligible Dolphin players available to play in the Dublin match if selected. A similar handwritten letter signed by the Secretary of Bray Unknowns is also included. The Secretary of the Irish Free State Association at this time was Jack Ryder and he would have signed and also received much of this material. Other correspondence from LOI clubs included St. James's Gate, Brideville AFC, Derry City, Cork Football Club, Leinster Senior League, Waterford Sports Company Ltd. Shelbourne F.C. Other letters were from Watford AFC, Sheffield United Cricket & Football Club Ltd, Dumbarton F.C. Falkirks Football and Athletic and a mss. letter signed from Patsy Gallagher of Falkirk F.C. A letter from the secretary of the Spanish Football Federacion says "we will never forget of the cordial welcome we got from you." Further letters from 1942 to 49 are from Drumcondra F.C, Everton, Liverpool. The collection continues through the 1950's & 60's with circa 136 items including items from Leicester, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham, Aston Villa, Man Utd, Fulham, Swansea, Shefield Wednesday, FIFA, FA, Football League and just 15 from 1980-1997. A wonderful unique and desirable archive of original material spanning over 60 years of Irish soccer history.
