One Volume bound in two Volumes due to added images (complete set). Octavo (15 cm x 22 cm). Pagination: Volume I: An extra-illustrated edition, with 96 plates instead of the only 18 plates which were called for according to the inventory pages of the set. Hardcover / Two stunning, privately commissioned, red morocco bindings with five raised bands as well as gilt lettering and ornament to spine, boards and inner pastedown-borders. Excellent condition with some minor signs of wear only. Both Volumes firm and endpapers intact. Interior beautiful and clean with a plethora of illustrations added into this rare second edition with the portraits reflecting personalities touched upon in the letters published by Vere Foster. The often rare portraits of contemporaries to the Duchess of Devonshire and Vere Foster's father, Sir Augustus Foster, are of significance since many of them are now scarce as well. In his "Note to the Second Edition", Vere Foster writes: "I have made only three alterations as follows: 1. I have added to the number of illustrations a portrait of Lady Byron / 2. I have accepted the suggestion of a critic in the "Athenaeum" that the letter of Oct. 29, 1786, in the former edition attributed to Sheridan, is really from Mrs. Sheridan / 3. With regard to the letter on p. 406, attributed to Napoleon, it has been suggested that this letter cannot be genuine, because the style of it is not purely French.[.] / Some critics have expressed disappointment at the absence of elucidations as to details of family history, but these I have purposely avoided. Vere Foster - March, 1898". Livre Edition originale
First Edition. Octavo (15 cm x 22 cm). Pagination: Frontispiece, IX, [3], 497 pages with 18 Illustrations (including frontispiece and one Vignette of the two Duchesses opposite page 1). Hardcover / Original, publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Very good condition with some minor signs of wear only. This is an astonishing find for the Vere Foster Research Community and the letter gives significant insight into the importance the publication had for him, its reception as seen by Vere Foster and it solves the riddle why an altertaion was necessary for the second edition [which Vere Foster explains in a brief note to the reader at the beginning of the second edition]. The heartfelt inscription to his niece Albinia Foster is also of great importance and to our knowledge the only presentation-copy of this book on the international market for the several decades we can look back at auction records. The collection also includes: 1. A book which Vere Foster possibly received as a gift from his father in 1845: "Vere Henry Foster from Sir A.F. - London 1845". 2. The publisher's archival-copy of "The Two Duchesses" - with manuscript corrections by the publisher, received for preparation of the second edition. Vere Henry Louis Foster (or Lewis) (25 April 1819 21 December 1900) was an English educationist and philanthropist. Born in Copenhagen on 25 April 1819, he was the third son of Sir Augustus John Foster, 1st Baronet and his wife, Albinia Jane (died 28 May 1867), daughter of George Vere Hobart, and granddaughter of George Hobart, 3rd Earl of Buckinghamshire. He was educated at Eton College, and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 30 May 1838. Leaving Oxford without a degree, Foster joined the diplomatic service. From 1842 to 1843 he was attached to the diplomatic mission of Sir Henry Ellis in Rio de Janeiro, and from 1845 to 1847 to that of Sir William Gore Ouseley in Montevideo. In 1847 Foster visited a family estate in County Louth, Ireland at the time of the Great Famine, with his eldest brother, Sir Frederick George Foster. They became involved in famine relief. In 1848 their father died, Vere Foster underwent a crisis in his life, and he came to concentrate on philanthropy in Ireland. Foster made three voyages to the United States as a steerage passenger in a ship of emigrants, finding the accommodation bad, and the treatment of emigrants exploitative. Through his cousin Vere Hobart, Lord Hobart he was able to influence parliament, and the Passengers Act 1851. He also took practical steps to promote Irish emigration to the USA. Later, Foster took up the improvement of education in Ireland. This was a time of Catholic suspicion of the national education system introduced by Richard Whately. Foster contributed to the provision of better school accommodation and apparatus, and gave grants in aid of building several hundred new school-houses. In 1879, with the Land War in Ireland, Foster concentrated on promoting female emigration to the United States and the British colonies. Young women were assisted, numbering 18,000 in 1880 3. He was supported in his projects by both Catholic and Protestant clergy. Foster died, unmarried, at Belfast on 21 December 1900. He was buried in Belfast City Cemetery. Sprache: english.

Octavo - Quarto. The Letters are housed in a beautiful, bespoke Solander-Chemise. The original books are either bound in Morocco ("Two Duchesses"), original cloth with dustjacket ("Jeffersonian America") or in the publisher's original interim-wrappers (the rare 1812-printing of "Three messages, from the President of the United States, to Congress, in November 1811, together with Documents accompanying the same"). Very good condition with some minor signs of wear only. The letters contain both personal and diplomatic news about a wide variety of subjects but some are of particular interest for understanding hitherto unknown diplomatic developments on historic events or military campaigns. Letters include for example: I. In a letter from May 7th,1815, only 5 weeks before Waterloo, in which Foster, in his function as "Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark", poses the question to Sir Charles Stuart, if Wellington wants Danish troops: "Castlereagh [Lord Castlereagh] said he did not know if the D[uke] of Wellington would want any Danish Troops, so pray enquire & let me know how many 1000nds I shall send you"] / II. Excellent Letter between Sir Augustus Foster and Sir Charles Stuart, from January 12th, 1828: Foster talks in this letter about being offered a Baronetry "in 1811 to fit me out for America & I refused it from not being rich enough" Foster also mentions in this letter, which was written 9 days before then Prime Minister, Viscount Goderich, resigned, about his inclination that "Goderich is, I believe, very disposed on the subject but scrupulous & I fear [he] will not be long in, he seems so sick of the worry of Buckinghsh. [Robert Hobart, 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire, the father of Viscount Goderich's wife, Lady Sarah Albinia Louisa Hobart, who had mental problems] / [Frederick John Robinson, 1st Earl of Ripon] who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1827 to 1828] Foster continues: "Your Letters are just as short & to the Point as if you were the responsible Person. Lets hope like La Ferronnays, [Pierre-Louis-Auguste Ferron, comte de La Ferronnays (Ministre des Affaires étrangères)] you will head the Foreign Affairs: When I see him [La Ferronnays] then I think it a very Natural thing that Diplomacy Should do as much for our Side of the Water". III. Further correspondence for example includes a letter from November 26 in the year 1830, in which Foster elaborates on a contact he had with Thomas Medwin [Percy Bysshe Shelley-biographer and Lord Byron-friend. In this letter to Stuart, Foster reports: "?] Medwin / Has been sent away from Genoa as suspected of being an agent of some of the Revolutionary Societies which are seeking to Blow up the world for their own Profit - He came here & wrote Me a Letter of Complaint, & before I could answer it, wrote me a Second complaining of my not Answering him, said he was confined to his Room by Illness & .not receive Mr. Legh who called twice to try & fend him. He set off the same evening to Geneva & London & lay his case before the Public as he Said in his Letters & I suppose I may be accused of having turned a Deaf Ear to his Complaints" [Wikipedia informs us: "Genoa, however, turned out to be only an interlude, as Medwin was expelled for writing a tragedy called The Conspiracy of the Fieschi, which alarmed the Genoese authorities, believing it to be anti-government propaganda. By January 1831 Medwin, without his family, was back in London, still hoping to earn a living as a writer."] / IV. Other letters contain information about the July Revolution; olive wood cups; his frustration at not being able to obtain a baronetcy; his efforts through his step-father, the Duke of Devonshire, his uncle, Lord Liverpool, and the prime minister (the Duke of Wellington) to obtain a baronetcy; Catholics; diplomacy with the Kingdom of Sardinia; putting up truffles; acknowledging King Louis Philippe; Austrian troops in Lombardy; medical quarantine; a poor purchase of a painting; diplomatic changes, and much more. [Transcriptions of these letters are in progress - Please enquire]. _________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________ Sir Augustus John Foster, 1st Baronet, GCH PC (1 or 4 December 1780 1 August 1848) was a British diplomat and politician. Born into a notable British family, Foster served in a variety of diplomatic functions in continental Europe and the United States, interrupted by a short stint as a Member of Parliament. He wrote about his American experiences in Notes on the United States of America. Foster was born in 1780, possibly in Ireland, and went on to study at Drogheda Grammar School and Christ Church, Oxford. He enjoyed a comfortable social situation; his father was the Irish MP for Ennis, John Thomas Foster (d. 1796), first cousin of John Foster and William Foster, and his mother Elizabeth Hervey, who would later go on to marry William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, was herself the daughter of Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol. Augustus had one older brother, Frederick (1777 1853) and an elder sister Elizabeth (b. 1778), who died several days after birth, as well as two illegitimate half-siblings. Augustus's parents separated in 1781, at which time he and his brother remained in the care of his father. On 18 March 1815, one year after his arrival in Denmark, he married Albina Jane Hobart. (b. 2 May 1788 - d. 28 May 1867) daughter of Hon. George Vere Hobart (b. 1761 d. 5 December 1802), second son of George Hobart, 3rd Earl of Buckinghamshire, having previously courted Anne Isabella Milbanke. They would go on to have three sons: Frederick George (2nd Bt) (b. 3 January 1816 d. unm. 25 December 1857), Cavendish Harvey (Rev'd) (3rd Bt) (b. 7 May 1817 d. 27 Nov 1890) and Vere Henry Louis (the philanthropist and educationalist) (b. 25 April 1819 d. 21 December 1900). Between roughly 1802 and 1804 Foster served as the Secretary to British legation, N.
