The photographs of Frank and his children with Sanyu are lovely and do not appear in published form anywhere else. Souvenir Bookmark, with list of pieces and their price estimates, laid-in. Published on the occasion of the landmark auction of the same name held by Sotheby's on October 19, 1997 in Taipei. Presents "Robert Frank's Sanyu". The most important - and most meaningful - private auction held of Sanyu's paintings, all of them entrusted and eventually simply given away to Robert Frank by Sanyu. It is the second such wildly successul auction by Sotheby's, after the massive Johan Franco Sanyu Collection. Misunderstood, ignored, and dismissed in his lifetime, Sanyu is now widely regarded as one of the greatest modern Chinese artists working in the Western tradition. The unmistakable influence of traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting is precisely what sets his work apart from his Western coevals, who saw him as working outside the mainstream, therefore an acquired, esoteric taste at best. What Sanyu achieved was to use Chinese art as a view INTO Western aesthetics - and finally, the world itself - which allowed him to render still lifes, landscapes, the nude, and portraits, all established Western genres, with refreshed eyes and arresting insight. The result are paintings that even Robert Frank, a highly educated artist, not just a photographer, did not understand at the time, by his own admission. For that is always the case with art that is different and genuinely new: It is always ahead of its time. Sanyu lived and died in extreme, starvation-level poverty as a Paris-based, "Chinaman" artist who had no appreciative audience or viable market at all. He bequeathed these twenty-one, exquisite pieces, a full-fledged collection, to Robert Frank in New York, as a gesture of appreciation and recompense for the friendship and financial support Frank extended, despite the latter's own precarious circumstances as a then-unknown photographer himself. All of the paintings were sold by Sotheby's, for millions of dollars, which proceeds Frank donated in full to the Foundation named after his daughter Andrea (who perished in a plane crash). The Foundation, in turn, used the money to support Chinese artists. An absolute "must-have" title for Sanyu and Robert Frank collectors. This Auction Catalog is now collectible and treasurable. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. The lovely Souvenir Bookmark is intact. Please note: Distributed to potential bidder/buyers only. None of the copies was commercially sold even in Taiwan. The two retrospective volumes on Sanyu now command thousands of dollars online if you can find them. This is surely an accessible and lovely introduction and alternative. A rare copy thus. 21 plates, supplemented with archival photographs and facsimile-letter by Robert Frank. Two of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine copy.
