Once listed this will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. The signed inscription is on the blank verso of the frontispiece. It reads ' For Karen in fondness, Talat. ' Talat Sait Halman (1931-2014) was a famous Turkish poet, translator and cultural historian. He was the first Minister of Culture of Turkey. During his long academic career, Professor Halman taught at Columbia University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania and New York University, where he also served as Chairman of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Literatures. From 1998 onward, he taught at Bilkent University as the dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Letters His honors include Columbia University's Thornton Wilder Prize for lifetime achievement as translator, an honorary doctorate from the Bosphorus University, a Rockefeller Fellowship in the Humanities, the UNESCO Medal, and the "Knight Grand Cross, the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire". ' You can see the blue covers of the book in the photos. They look perfectly clean. There is little to no wear. The edges look excellent. So do the corners. There's a teeny tiny crease above the rear covers bottom corner. The white lettering on the spine is very bright. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are a dark blue. There is a frontispiece drawing of the poet. The interior of the book is in terrific shape. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm not finding any soiling. I don't see any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of Professor Halman's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It looks clean. It does have some smooth rubbing, also some small scuffs, particularly at the corners and spine ends. There's also a thin 1 1/2 inch tear just off the top edge of the rear cover. The white flaps with blue lettering are in nice shape, although all four corners are clipped and the price is gone. From the dust jacket: 'I am listening to Istanbul, intent my eyes closed" begins the title poem in this collection. The directness and freshness, the openness to the sounds and events of everyday life are characteristic of the work of Orhan Veli Kanik, one of Turkey's most influential modern poets. His poems are concerned with the common man in his diurnal existence, at work or play, happy or sad. Kanik scoffed at traditional Turkish verse with its rigid forms and conventional themes. In a short lifetime he revolutionized Turkish poetry, awakening critics and "everyman" to the possibilities of new forms and new concerns. His name and many of his lines became household phrases. His death in 1950 was deeply mourned. Not only was this a tragic loss to poetry, but there was also a keenly felt personal loss among friends and admirers. For Kanik conveyed in person as well as in his poems the image of a human being alive to the recurrent joys and sorrows of the world around him. His creative genius lay in his ability to reflect upon them with grace, humor, and compassion.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
