First 4to, cloth. 192 pp, 181 b/w illustrations, chronology, index. Exhibition June 27 - October 8, 1996. Coincidentally, the purchase of "The New-York Times" and its first publication of a photographic halftone (in the paper's illustrated Sunday magazine) occurred within a month of each other in 1896. These photographs, portraits of Stephen A. Douglas and John Bell, both candidates for the presidency in 1860, were not exactly of breaking news. The first photograph in the main news section of the newspaper did not appear until 1904 and the first front-page photograph until 1910. 0810961679 Very good in dj.

Etat : Very Good. New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1988. First Edition. William Safire's copy, with autograph letter signed by editor Peter Galassi to the New York Times columnist and essay contributor laid in. Quarto (10.75" x 9"); 192pp. Photo-illustrated dust jacket over dark green cloth with black stamped lettering. Jacket is clean and crisp with no chips, tears, or marks. Boards are sturdy and square. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. Galassi's letter, hand-written on 8.5" x 5.5" MoMA letterhead and apparently initially accompanying an unbound proof copy and transferred to the bound one when it became available later, reads: "11 June 1996 / Dear Bill Safire -- We won't have bound copies until shortly before the exhibition opens, but I thought you might want to see the book in this form. I really can't thank you enough for your contribution to the book, but I look forward to trying the next time I see you -- perhaps at the breakfast preview of the exhibition on Wednesday, June 16, 8:00 to 11:00 A.M. With great thanks and best wishes, Peter Galassi.".
