Presentation copy, inscribed by Maynard Geiger on the front flyleaf in the first volume and signed by him on the half-title in the second volume, with two press photographs, including one inscribed by Geiger on the verso, laid in. Definitive and full documented biography of Father Junipero Serra, the pioneering Franciscan priest responsible for founding the first nine 21 missions in California, drawing on the resources of 54 different archives. Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988, Serra was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015. Tall octavo, two volumes: 448 p. and 508 p. with frontispiece portraits, 11 plates, and 6 maps. Original blue cloth bindings, with gilt titles. Mild offsetting from newspaper clippings to the endpapers, with just a hint of edgewear to the boards; otherwise very good.
