Rudolph Ackermann. A pleasing quarto measuring 13.5" x 11.5" and bound in the original finely woven green cloth blindstamped with filigree designs filling each corner; and stamped brightly in gilt on the front boards. Heavy wear to the spine which is missing about 30% of the cloth, leaving the gilded title readable. Heavy wear to the extremities and the corners as well. The hinges have been re-glued, making this a possible candidate for rebinding. However, all 24 hand-coloured aquatints and the large folding map with colour highlights are the end are present. Includes the list of subscribers. (4 pages)and a 2-page dedication to his Majesty George the Fourth. A beautiful and very picturesture tour along the Rhine, indeed. Rudolph Ackermann (20 April 1764 in Stollberg, Electorate of Saxony 30 March 1834 in Finchley, London)[1] was an Anglo-German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. Between 1797 and 1800 Ackermann rapidly developed his print and book publishing business[6] bringing together wide variety of talented artists and printmakers including Thomas Rowlandson, Isaac Cruikshank, John Bluck, Theodore Lane, Henry Singleton, Maria Cosway, F. J. Manskirchten, J. C. Stadler, J. H. Schultz, Henri Merke, Thomas Sutherland, Nicholas Heidelhoff, Augustus Pugin, and G. M. Woodward in numerous projects to produce both individual prints as well as illustrations for books and magazines, encompassing many different genres including topography, caricature, portraits, transparencies and decorative prints.[citation needed]In 1809 he applied his press to the illustration of Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions, which appeared monthly until 1829, by when forty volumes had appeared. The Repository documented the changing classicising fashions in dress and furniture of the Regency; Thomas Rowlandson and other distinguished artists were regular contributors. William Combe and Rowlandson's parody, Dr Syntax in search of the Picturesque first appeared in parts in Ackermann's Poetical Magazine and was then reissued as a bestselling separate book. Ackermann also published Rowlandson's masterpiece The English Dance of Death (2 volumes 1816). He introduced from Germany[7] the fashion of the once popular Literary Annuals, beginning in 1823 with Forget-Me-Not; and he published many illustrated volumes of topography and travel, including The Microcosm of London (3 volumes, 1808 1811), Westminster Abbey (2volumes, 1812),[8] The Rhine (1820),[9] The Seine (1821),[10] and The World in Miniature (43volumes, 1821 1826).[1]An inventor and innovator, he was important as a carriage designer and patented the Ackermann steering geometry.[11] In 1801 he patented a method for rendering paper and cloth waterproof and erected a factory in Chelsea to make it.[12] He was one of the first to illuminate his own premises with gas.[13] Indeed, the introduction of lighting by gas owed much to him. Minor scattered spotting, slight offsetting to map, generally an excellent copy. One of Ackermann's major colour plate books and apparently the first in his "Picturesque Tours" series, others of which explore the Seine, the Ganges, and the Thames. The book describes a trip down the Rhine on that part of the river generally considered most romantic and charming, "from Mentz to Cologne, and of the Bathing-Places of Wiesbaden and Embs". The account contains not only topographical descriptions, but considerable historical information and details of popular traditions, the book being written "with a view chiefly to the information of travellers of cultivated minds who may be induced to visit this interesting portion of Germany (Preface of the Author)". The original German edition was published in Wiesbaden in 1819 as Die Rheingegenden von Mainz bis Cölln, without illustrations. The third issue, with the plates numbered in top right corner. First edition in English, early issue with the plates watermarked 1817-1818, without plate numbers at the top right-hand corner and with good impressions and coloring. This is one of Ackermann's major color plate books and apparently the first in his "Picturesque Tours" series, others of which explore the Seine, the Ganges, and the Thames. 750 copies were printed on "large wove Elephant Vellum Paper", to match the format of the Histories of Oxford, Cambridge, Colleges and Schools, Westminster Abbey, and Microcosm of London. The book describes a trip down the Rhine on that part of the river generally considered most romantic and charming. The account contains not only topographical descriptions, but considerable historical information and details of popular traditions. Very good copy. 330x275mm. (13x10¾").

(Cologne) "The original [unillustrated] German edition was published in Wies-baden in 1819 as Die Rheingegenden von Mainz bis Cölln, and it is clear from the.â Vorerinnerung', which is dated 14 June 1819, that Ackermann's edition was already planned; it seems possible in the circumstances, in fact, that the text was commissioned by Ackermann, as were the views for the plates.Another German edition, this time containing twenty-four views, was published in Frankfurt in 1822" (Abbey). "Containing a complete History and Picturesque Description of a portion of Country so full of curious and interesting circumstances, as well as so resplendent for its landscape, grandeur, and beauty. The Work will be embellished with Twenty-four highly finished and coloured Engravings, from Drawings expressly made by an eminent Artist, resident near the Banks of the Rhine, and habitually familiar with every part of it.The romantic, beautiful, and ever-varying Scenery of this River forms a distinguished feature of every modern foreign Tour; and no one can consider himself as an accomplished traveller who is not more or less acquainted with it.Baron von Gerning, whose literary character is so well established in Germany, has undertaken to write the Historical Part; and Mr. Schutz, so well known as an artist, will furnish the Drawings" (Ackermann's prospectus for the completed work, printed on the rear wrapper of Part I and others). "There are definitely later issues of the book.and these can be recognized by having plate numbers at the top right-hand corner. The impressions in these issues are poor and the colouring less good" (Abbey). Abbey, Travel, 217. Martin Hardie, pp. 107-108 and 312. Prideaux, pp. 337 and 375. Tooley 234.
