Les "Synonymes Français" dont la première édition date de 1718, comporte une table alphabétique et sont suivis dans notre exemplaire du Traité de la prosodie française de l'abbé d'Olivet et d'une dissertation, en forme d'entretien, de Mr. Durand sur le même sujet, Genève, chez les Frères Cramer et Cl. Philibert, 1750, précédé d'une page de faux titre daté de 1799. Ouvrage de référence pour l'histoire de la langue française, à la lecture savoureuse. Coiffe en queue et en tête très fragiles et l'une déchirée, taches d'encre en queue, petites traces de vers au mors supérieur, plats un peu usagés, mais solide exemplaire.(ALC120) Size: 10 x 16. Deuxième édition de ce classique, la première sous ce titre. L'abbé Girard avait publié une première version en 1718 sous le titre "La Justesse de la langue française ou les différentes significations des mots qui passent pour synonymes", cette nouvelle édition est considérablement enrichie et sera un grand succès, constamment réédité. Coiffes arasées, coins frottés, amorce de fente au mors supérieur, griffures au premier plat, mouillure angulaire surtout visible en début de volume. Bon exemplaire néanmoins.

"Quoique l'intérêt pour les synonymes remonte à l'Antiquité, c'est l'abbé Gabriel Girard (1677-1748) posa les bases modernes de leur étude (.).
