These years, from 630~680, not only transformed a whole vast region, but ensured that the pattern of life in the Middle East would never be the same again. Muhammed and his immediate successors, these Arabs who started from nothing, decided the framework of many things for thirteen hundred years. The fantastically short time in which this empire was built up, the simplicity of its administration, and the victories won through burning religious zeal and desperate courage by relatively untrained and unorganized armies, make for exciting reading. No one~volume history has ever covered this remarkable material before, and The Great Arab Conquests is made vivid and relevant by John Bagot Glubb's knowledge of the terrain, his gift for seeing modern parallels, the care he has taken not to assume background knowledge of the period on the part of his readers, and the new maps he has personally prepared. Just as he learned Arabic as a living language, so the author has set down this history as something that came alive for him while he lived, traveled, and fought in the mountains, deserts, and valleys which are its setting. The Great Arab Conquests is a history that John Bagot Glubb is uniquely qualified to reconstruct.

The brilliant thing about this book is that it merges and yet distinguishes among the different sources of information we have about Mohammed's life. Thus, information from the Quran is very accurate, since it was written contemporaneously. The various biographies, histories and oral traditions are questionable because they were written down 100-200 or more years after Mohammed's death. This is very significant today, because the Quran makes it clear that Mohammed got along well with Jews and Christians, and even honored them for their devotion to the Scriptures. By contrast, the Islamic terrorists make their erroneous claims by referring to histories and traditions that were written down centuries after Mohammed's death, and reflect the writer's views rather than Mohammed's views. Glubb's book weaves all of these sources of information into a fascinating narration of Mohammed's life, but at the same time he indicates the source and validity of the various stories, especially the sensitive ones. That's what makes this book valuable today. Ref YYY 5.

Lieutenant-General Sir John Bagot Glubb, KCB, CMG, DSO, OBE, MC, KStJ, KPM (16 April 1897 ? 17 March 1986), known as Glubb Pasha by the Jordanians, was a British soldier, scholar, and author, who led and trained Transjordan's Arab Legion between 1939 and 1956 as its commanding general. During the First World War, he served in France. Glubb has been described as an "integral tool in the maintenance of British control." He became an officer of the Arab Legion in 1930. The next year he formed the Desert Patrol ? a force consisting exclusively of Bedouin ? to curb the raiding problem that plagued the southern part of the country. Within a few years he had persuaded the Bedouin to abandon their habit of raiding neighbouring tribes. He also took part in suppressing the Ikhwan revolt. In 1939, Glubb succeeded Frederick G. Peake as the commander of the Arab Legion (subsequently known as the Jordan Royal Army). During this period, he transformed the Legion into the best-trained force in the Arab world. Ref YYY 5.
