Etat : A very good example. Edition : Deluxe Handbound Printing of Five Hundred Copies, , Contemporary quarter red cloth over marbled paper boards, tile on paper label on upper board, title in ink on the flat spine. , The Mappings of Victorian Toronto printed for the Paget Press in October 1984 in both Santa Barbara, California and Toronto, Ontario. This book has been designed by Peter Sibbald Brown with typography by Eildon Graphica of Sutton West. The cover presents a period motif and has been printed via letterpress and lithography by Graham Mackintosh. This edition is issued in a deluxe handbound printing of 500 copies. Charles Edward Goad (1848?1910) was a noted cartographer and civil engineer. Goad is most noted for his insurance surveys of cities in Canada, Great Britain, and elsewhere. Fire insurance companies needed to know in detail the nature and size of buildings, width of streets, construction, building materials and the proximity of fire services and water supplies in order to estimate appropriate premiums. Goad established a company (the Charles E. Goad Company) in 1875 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to produce maps to provide this information. These and like maps are now referred to as Goad maps. , Size : Folio.

English railway engineer, went to Canada in 1868, where he did not pursue engineering, but became a representative for the Sanborn Company which published fire insurance plans. From 1875 Goad began to compile and publish his own large-scale plans of Canadian towns from a base in Montreal, and soon became the largest private mapmaker in Canada. By 1885 Charles Goad had returned to Britain and established a branch in London. Goadâs highly detailed plans included information on property holdings, building construction, use and contents, and, like Sanbornâs, functioned as Fire Insurance Plans. Once leased to an insurance company the map volumes were regularly updated by a team of workers who over-pasted sections with new information onto the existing maps, some of them building up to many layers. Goadâs business rapidly expanded to cover the cities and industrial areas of Britain, Denmark, France, Egypt, Turkey, Venezuela, Bermuda, Mexico and South Africa. After his death the company was run by his three sons. Copyrights and assets of the Canadian branch of the company were sold to The Underwriterâs Survey Bureau in 1931., Size : 457x710 (mm), 18x27.875 (Inches), Printed in Color, 0 Good; fold strengthened; minor repair on the left and right margins.

Etat : Excellent; fold strengthened. Map of Toronto at the intersection of Warden Ave. and Fowler Rd. with Danforth Ave. to the North, Eastwood Ave. to the East, Kingston Rd. to the South and Victoria Park to the West. Goad?s highly detailed plans included information on property holdings, building construction, use and contents, and, like Sanborn?s, functioned as Fire Insurance Plans. Once leased to an insurance company the map volumes were regularly updated by a team of workers who over-pasted sections with new information onto the existing maps, some of them building up to many layers. Goad?s business rapidly expanded to cover the cities and industrial areas of Britain, Denmark, France, Egypt, Turkey, Venezuela, Bermuda, Mexico and South Africa. After his death the company was run by his three sons. Copyrights and assets of the Canadian branch of the company were sold to The Underwriter?s Survey Bureau in 1931., Size : 465x702 (mm), 18.25x27.625 (Inches), Printed in Color, 0.
