Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Günter Grass (dustwrapper illustration) (illustrateur). 5th or later Edition. A reprint of the revised UK edition, published in 1981. The first English translation was published by Pantheon Books in the USA in 1962. First published in the UK by Secker & Warburg also in 1962, the book was re-issued in 1974, and this is a 1981 reprint of this re-issued edition. Dustwrapper illustration by the author Günter Grass. Translated from the German by Ralph Manheim. ***Very good in navy-blue cloth covered boards, with gilt and red titles and decoration to the spine. Gilt still beautifully bright. Cloth clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. There is very light creasing to the spine. Spine tight. Foxing to the top edge, and very light foxing to the fore-edge of the page block. Interior pages clean, apart from some very light foxing to the rear endpaper. No inscriptions. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper that is unpriced (possibly for export). There is a scuff and light creasing to the spine of the dustwrapper. Extremities of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and creased. No tears. The white colour has got slightly marked over the years. ***592 pages including a glossary at the back of the book. 220 mm x 138 mm. ***'Published in Germany in 1959, "The Tin Drum" occasioned such a furore as to put its author at the top of his literary generation and make his book a bestseller. It has since been translated into virtually every European language and published everywhere with success and acclaim. Grass was born in Danzig and lived in Paris when writing this book. Draughtsman, sculptor, stage-designer, playwright and poet, he had, before the German publication of "The Tin Drum", only been known to readers of literary reviews and frequenters of the experimental theatres. This is emphatically no longer so.' [Quote taken from the rear flap of the dustwrapper]. ***A later printing of the Secker & Warburg UK edition, complete in its original dustwrapper. A good reading copy of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first and most famous novel. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
