First english edition. Although it is stated on the title-page that the authors were Swedish, in fact the author was Pierre Jean Grosley, the prolific French writer known for his erudition and insights. His Observations on Italy (originally published in French in 1764) is his most important work. Along with being an excellent account of Italy, Grosley also demonstrates within it through his descriptions of his countrymen in Italy, many foibles and vanities which are part of the French character. It is suggested by Nugent that by claiming the authors to be anonymous travelers from Swedish, the French public would accept the this criticism more easily than if it came from a Frenchman. It has also been suggested that as a travel narrative it would be considered of greater value if the travelers were from somewhere farther away. Sections within the book relative to the article of Venice, and the Sacred panegiric of the seraphic father Saint Francis were by Francesco da S. Augustino Macedo and had originally been printed in Padua. There is also a comparative history of Italian and French music; an essay which fell into my hands according to the Editor. 2 volumi.

(délibération du Conseil municipal de Troyes) - Rare - Réf. 48385 LES ÉPHÉMÉRIDES TROYENNES de Grosley ont paru de 1757 à 1768. Cette publication lui suscita de nombreux ennemis. On alla même jusqu'à le dénoncer au garde des sceaux comme un homme en qui "l'impiété avait étouffé tout sentiment d'honneur, d'humanité et de religion".Cette nouvelle édition, encouragée par la municipalité de Troyes, fut donné par PATRIS-DUBREUIL. Il en a changé l'ordre, supprimé la phrase contre M. Gentil qui avait donné lieu à l'accusation, et ajouté quelques inédits et d'importantes notes. L. M. Patris-Dubreuil (Rosieres 1778 - Troyes 1858) fut avocat puis juge à Troyes. Il était un admirateur passionné de Grosley. Livres 285629928204.

1 lettre autographe signée 3 In-4 11/02/1738 Adresse au dos. bon Belle et rare lettre du jeune Grosley venu faire son droit à Paris, découvrant sa passion des livres. Il disserte avec humour sur le cheminement de sa lettre arrivée tachée de gras dans la poche d'un «honnête marmiton», puis évoque sa vie à Paris. «J'ay changé, pendant le voyage de votre lettre, de condition et de climat. Je veux dire que j'ay quitté Mr Hua et le Chatelet pour entrer au parlement chez un fort brave homme qui s'appelle Poultier, et demeurant rue Quinquempoix. Là je suis 4e et dernier clerc avec un très grand apétit que, je crois, le changement de climat a redoublé. Quand j'étais clerc au Châtelet, j'alois quelques fois bouquiniser sur les quays; et j'ay pensé plus d'une fois à vous; surtout quand je trouvois des Fernand Mendez Pinto; mais comme vous savez [] je ne sçay si en bouquinant je ne feray pas quelque deshonneur à l'illustre corps dont j'ay l'honneur d'être membre subalterne. Je me consulteray là-dessus, et votre lettre a fait déjà tomber plus des trois quarts de mes scrupules []». Il évoque ensuite les livres qu'il achète et qu'il lui cède, dont un Molière «acheté 40 s.», conseille un ami qui se lance «dans le genre satirique» mais dont il juge la route difficile et bien dangereuse. Et conclut: «je vous prie de ne me pas qualifier d'étudiant en droit parce que je n'y travaille qu'à l'insu de mon bourgeois; qualifiez moy à la bonne heure d'étudiant en chicanne». Écrivain champenois et encyclopédiste, il uvra pour sa ville natale, Troyes, dont il écrivit l'histoire.
