Sixth edition, the "best edition of a work still in general use, and the best of that kind that was ever published" (Lowndes), justly described as such on account of the large number of new illustrations; this copy beautifully bound by Francis Bedford, "considered the leading English bookbinder of his time, surpassed only by the best French binders" (ODNB). John Guillim's (1550-1621) work on heraldry was first published in 1610, and "was to remain the standard textbook on English heraldry until the second half of the eighteenth century, and it is still regularly used by working heralds in the twenty-first century" (ibid.). ESTC T140947; Lowndes 956. Folio (386 x 239 mm). Late 19th-century red morocco by Francis Bedford, spine lettered in gilt with 6 raised bands, compartments with scrolling corner pieces enclosing foliate lozenges, covers concentrically panelled in gilt, inner gilt panels with cornerpieces incorporating gilt crowns, gilt floral turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. With 65 engraved plates. 19th-century ownership signature of H. H. Vaughan to front free endpaper verso (probably Henry Halford Vaughan, 1811-1885, Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford). A fresh, clean copy, handsomely bound.

(xvi), 430pp. (i), +(xxviii) (433) of additions and alphabetical table (table separately printed). Roman letter, printed side notes, woodcut initials and headpieces. Innumerable heraldic shields (most hand-colored), nine full page woodcut armorial achievements described in considerable detail. Engraving bound in after page 422. Modern half-calf over marbled boards, spine with red morocco lettering label stamped in gilt; (occasionally browned, some edges brittle; light edgewear). This rare colored copy is from the collection of American film star Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.; his heraldic bookplate is on the front pastedown. Early inscriptions, possibly by former owners one passage mentioning Edmund Taylor and describing his arms to front endpaper (incomplete), "Tho. Chelmys?" to title, and a later inscription crediting an earlier work by Sir William Segar titled The Booke of Honour and Armes which was published anonymously in 1590. Third Edition. Guillum s monumental work A Display of Heraldrie was first written and published around 1610; and then was reprinted as early as 1611. There were six or seven further editions of the book following Guillim s death, with the last one being printed in 1724. Guillim was born in Gloucestershire and entered the College of Arms in London after finishing studies at Oxford. At the College he became a junior officer of arms, a Rouge Croix pursuivant, in 1618. Guillim was devoted to heraldic studies and to writing the Display which proved to be the best organized and most encyclopedic work of English heraldry of its time. In it, Guillim deals with the social history and beginnings of heraldry, the different images appearing on arms, the various kinds of escutcheons and the families to whom they belonged, all divided into six parts and then into subchapters which were each closely analyzed. The alphabetical table comprises the names of those families whose arms are contains in the Display so one could look people up with ease. Although a small addition to the volume it makes the work much more usable. In his dedication to the King, Guillim rightly claims the merit of his originality, writing, "I am the first who brought a method unto this heroic art." Former owner, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. was the first American actor to receive the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) from King George VI in 1949. He was a famed actor, and often dubbed a "gentleman s gentleman." The College of Arms in London granted Fairbanks a coat of arms of a silken knot on a blue ground, symbolizing the friendship of the U.S. and Britain united across the Atlantic Ocean. Guillum s is a paramount work on heraldry, possibly never surpassed in content and still a leading reference from an important 20th century collection.

He is, perhaps, best remembered for his monumental work "A Display of Heraldry" which was first published in London in 1610. Born in 1565 (some date 1550) in the county of Herefordshire. This part of England is very close to the border with Wales and Guillim's ancestors were probably of Welsh extraction. He was educated at Brasenose College in Oxford University. In 1575 a John Guillim of Minsterworth married Frances Dennis, and raised a family of one boy, John, and three girls, Margaret, Frances, and Priscilla - unreliable source? The first record of his involvement with heraldry is the Earl Marshal's warrant, dated 23 February 1604, permitting him to bear the tabard of the Portsmouth Pursuivant Extraordinary. From Michaelmas 1613, he was receiving a salary from the College of Arms, though his official appointment as Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary was not made until 1618. The Display of Heraldry was written around 1610 and reprinted as early as 1611. There were seven further editions of the book following Guillim's death, with the last one being printed in 1724. Some historians have suggested that the original author of the Display of Heraldry was a clergyman named John Barkham who was unwilling to have the work published in his own name. Guillim's death is recorded as having occurred on 7 May 1621, probably at Minsterworth, although there is no record of his place of burial. Sir Ilay Campbell of Succoth (1734 - 1823) was a Scottish judge, was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland in 1783 and Lord Advocate in 1784. He became Member of Parliament for Glasgow Burghs in the same year. He was Lord President of the Court of Session and Lord Justice General from 1789 to 1808. In 1808, he was created a baronet. He also was Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1799, and died in 1823 aged eighty-nine years. Source: Wikipedia Sprache: Englisch.

Edition : Fourth edition., Recent gilt-lined ½ calf with marble boards, spine in six compartments of raised bands, gilt text on two, four and six, gilt armorial motif on three, edges speckled red, endpapers renewed. , ?This fourth edition is dedicated to the Marquess of Hertford by Richard Blome, whose maternal grandfather, Richard Adams, in his lifetime was in his Lordship?s service. The dedication is follwed by an address ?To none but Gentlemen,? by Francis Nower, who, for the advantage of the printer, was induced to add some hundreds of Coats to the former editions, but confesses there are three families whose Arms are inserted that he could wish omitted. ?The Display? is extended to 444 pages. The ?Register of the Knights of the Garter? is dedicated to the Earl of Northumberland, and the ?Catalogue of Baronets? to Sir Edmond Bacon, by Richard Blome. These lists occupy 36 pages. Of the Baronets, F. Nower observes, there are some Coats he thought better to omit at the latter end, than to have inserted upon uncertain grounds, the printed Catalogue being defective, and the Heralds at Oxford not keeping so punctual an account of them in the hurry of a civil war as formerly.?The utility of this book is much increased, by the addition of an alphabetical Table of Names at the end, which is much wanted in the former.?This edition had scarcely been issued when the Restoration brought Heraldry into more request, and rendered a selection of the examples, upon the rise of a new party, necessary, to obtain a sale.? (BH), Size : Tall 4to., With an intricately engraved title plate, fourteen decorative headpieces and eleven initials. Profusely illustrated with in-text engravings of various coats of arms of seventeenth-century British nobility., References : Bibliotheca Heraldica CXCV, P.
