Contains a selection of the best of Doré s illustrations from the Bible, Milton s Paradise Lost, Dante s Inferno, Cervantes Don Quixote, La Fontaine s Fables and Baron Munchausen, among others. With a life of Doré (who was only 38 at the time of publication), critical essay, and descriptive text to establish the context for each illustration by Edmund Ollier. The ultimate Doré anthology (Malan, 273). Text and plates clean and fine. Elegant full morocco leather binding with gilt titles and decoration to the spine, raised bands, gilt decorated boards, gilt page edges, yellow end papers and inner gilt dentelles. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles and decoration, five raised bands, rubbed and worn with scuffs to some of the compartments. Joints good condition rubbed and worn, with some loss of colour, small crack starting to the base of the front joint of Vol I, binding strong and solid. Corners good condition bumped and worn with some loss of colour. Boards very good condition full leather, gilt decorated, minor marks and scratches. Page edges very good condition all gilt, darkened to the top. See above and photos. Internally Hinges very good condition sound. Paste downs good condition yellow, gilt dentelles. Full brown leather decorated in gilt and black; all edges gilt; turn-ins tooled in gilt; red, white and gilt endpapers. A straight, sound, and striking copy with a few minor scratches to front and rear, one small chip to front, and light scuffing to bottom edge. Endpapers browned at edges, else internally clean and plates bright. A Very Good to Near Fine copy. A handsome deluxe production of this collection of Dore's best-known works, rarely seen in this condition.
