Etat : Good. 1942. First Edition. 320 pages. No dust jacket. Blue cloth with silver titles to spine. Includes work by various writers. Pages have slight foxing, tanning and minor thumbing. A few dog-eared corners. Previous owner's inscription to front endpaper and pastedown. Boards have some moderate edge wear, with slight bumping to corners and minor bumping to spine ends. Boards rather rubbed and marked overall. Silver titles are bright.

Externally smart with fading to the spine, slight rubbing to the illustration to the front board, damp staining and slight cockling to the rear, minimal rubbing to the joints and bumping to the extremities resulting in wear and a very small closed tear to the tail of the spine. Endpapers age toned with remnants of a prize label dated 1919 to the front free endpaper. Front hinge tender and rear starting, both after blanks. Internally generally firmly bound with occasional signs of strain and frontispiece weak. Pages lightly age toned with the odd spot and handling mark. Very Good. book.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and a further seven black-and-white plates by the Golden Age book illustrator Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). Collated, complete. A collection of fourteen short stories illustrated with early examples of illustrations by Arthur Rackham. The first four stories, 'On an Indian Trail', 'At Duty's Call', 'Working Up' and 'Down a Crevasse', were written by George Alfred Henty (1832-1902), who is well-known for his adventure fiction and historical fiction. Other authors include Australian novelist Guy Boothby (1867-1905); L. T. Meade (the pseudonym for Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith); John Arthur Barry (1850-1911); and Henry Anderson Bryden.
