CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The very scarce first edition, seldom offered for sale - here in quite nice condition. The 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at the end of 1861, reenlisted in 1864 and fought until the end of the war. It wax engaged at Second Manassas and Gettysburg in the Eastern Theater and at Wauhatchie in the Western Theater and took part in the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea, and the Campaign of the Carolinas. It is identified as one of the Fox 300 Fighting Regiments. The author was a lawyer and judge before the war. At the onset of the war, Judge Hurst resigned his position on the bench and became captain of Company A, Seventy-third Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In June 1862, he was promoted to the rank of major of this regiment; served as such until the spring of 1864, was then promoted to the lieutenant-colonelcy, and in June of the same year received a commission as colonel. With this rank he commanded his regiment throughout the Atlanta campaign and Sherman's "March to the Sea". REFERENCES: DORN OH# 312; NEVINS pg. 109 "Hurst left the service as a brigadier general and immediately expanded his diary with remembrances to complete this useful journal of service in both theaters." ; RYAN 376: "This history is largely his (Colonel Hurst) own observations and experiences but it is also a faithful record of his regiment. He accurately gives its service from its organization in 1861 to the Grand Review at Washington in 1865." FOX 300 pg 331. MULLINS/REED #182; COULTER 251: "Hurst, who attained the rank of brevet brigadier general in March of 1865, writes principally of military activities but mentions aspects of the country. In Georgia he admired the beauty of some small towns; in East Tennessee he sensed much Unionism among the people. He wrote immediately after the war, expanding a sketchy diary with fresh memories. He found that the South, based on slavery, was beautiful enough at the top but degrading to the mass of the people.".
