One hundred years of publication is the proud record of the Tonbridge Free press - which has never missed an issue, despite many difficulties, financial and otherwise, and strong competition, which it faced from the day it was first published. Weekly journals from Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells, notably the Maidstone Journal, the Maidstone Gazette, the Sussex Advertiser and the Sussex Express had limited circulations in Tonbridge in those far off days. There had, too, even then, been sporadic attempts at more intimate publications, but they were offshoots, or localised editions of larger papers, which disappeared after more or less precarious existence.
