"One of the most renowned Japanese photographers of the 20th century, Hiroshi Hamaya captured gripping images of people and landscapes in rural Japan for more than two decades. His black-and-white photographs communicate tacit truths about post-war relations between Japan and the United States. Hamaya, who learned how to take photographs as a teenager, started working as a freelance photographer in 1937 after one of his photos was published in Home Life magazine. He traveled extensively throughout Japan and globally during his career and was the first Japanese photographer to join Magnum Photos, the international photography cooperative." (Getty Museum).
