Da auch dort die Lage zumal für die Ausländer immer schwieriger wurde, kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und war wieder als Architekt tätig. Unfreiwillig musste er wenig später erneut in die Sowjetunion: als Soldat. Walter Hämer hat weite Bereiche des riesigen Landes kennengelernt. Die Schwerpunkte seiner Aufzeichnungen betreffen Moskau, Zentralasien und den Kaukasus. Seine Texte werden durch umfangreiche Anmerkungen, einen tabellarischen Lebenslauf, den Überblick über sein architektonisches Schaffen, das häufig sogar durch den Denkmalstatus aus der Masse des Gebauten hervorgehoben wird, und ein ausführliches Register ergänzt."
