A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Lord Hardwicke, with the caption "High political office". Accompanied by a one page biographical sheet. Charles Philip Yorke, 5th Earl of Hardwicke, PC (April 23, 1836 - May 18, 1897), was controller of the household of Queen Victoria and Master of the Buckhounds 1874-1880. He married Sophia Georgiana, daughter of Henry Richard Charles Wellesley, 1st Earl Cowley, in 1863.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with small stain at head of first page. Docketed on reverse of second leaf. The letter concerns Hardwicke's direction that Harry Court Amiel, son of 'Captain Amiel, Hounslow Barracks, Hounslow', be nominated 'for a Cavalry Cadetship in Bengal'. Amiel has been 'a Cornet in the 7th Regt of Dragoons, (or Hussars as they are called)' for a year, and 'bears a very good character from his Commanding Officer'. He asks McLeay to 'take the proper means for procuring from one of the Gentlemen who is indebted to me, a nomination', asking that 'the other Cadetship [.] stand over to the next Season'.

Maudy, Inhabitants of All Saints and many more, judgments and verdicts are given, golden calf boards show moderate scuffing to perimeters with dark scuff marks to back, corners scuffed and rounded, spine edges split for two inches at each corner, spine is well scuffed with five raised bands, red title block with gilt, some letters scuffed in CASES, light scuffing to spine head and tail, hinges cracked with mild play, old Philadelphia bookseller stamp on front pastedown with signature of previous owner, interior very clean with age toning throughout, all text quite legible, binding firm, 424 pages with index, 8 X 12.25 inches.
