The last of three short novels, A WAIF OF THE PLAINS (1890), SUSY, A STORY OF THE PLAINS (1893) and CLARENCE (1885), that comprise one complete story. The first part of CLARENCE is set in California; the second part is set in the field during the American Civil War, at which point, Clarence is a general in the Union army. "Clarence is developed from a boy, through circumstances, to a cool, determined man, showing at times the traits of his father, Hamilton Brant, the desperado, always keeping up to the standard of conduct he had set for himself as a boy." - Quinn, American Fiction, p. 239. Baird and Greenwood, California Fiction 1084. BAL 7376. Wright (III) 2530. Some spots on the cloth, mostly spine and rear panels, magazine clippings pasted to front endpapers, inner hinges cracked, a fair copy. (#164580).

12mo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-283 [284: blank], flyleaves at front and rear, original decorated green cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, brown coated endpapers. First edition. A collection of short stories, most set in the mining communities of California's gold rush country. "A Passage in the Life of John Oakhurst" (1875) includes "one of Harte's best studies of a married flirt and some of his most blistering satire of hypocrisy. In 'Wan Lee, the Pagan' (1874) the loyalty of a Chinese boy, a thief, to a little girl and his death at the hands of a mob reveal Bret Harte in his search for redeeming qualities in apparently unpromising elements in California life." - Quinn, American Fiction, p. 237. Baird and Greenwood, California Fiction 1122. BAL 7280 (state B). Wright (III) 1121. Cloth worn at spine ends and corners, damp stain to cloth on front panel, inner hinges cracked but holding tight, a sound, internally clean copy. (#164579).

First U.S. edition. BAL notes two states of the title leaf, with no sequence determined. This copy has the integral title leaf with copyright notice reading "COPYRIGHTED," a copyright deposit copy thus. This book was issued by subscription in various binding formats, this being one of the more costly deluxe formats. Harte's only long novel, first published in SCRIBNER'S MONTHLY, November 1875 - August 1876. "While it cannot be said to have been completely successful, it hardly deserves the general condemnation under which it has fallen. Harte did not have the constructive ability for a novel, and the plot becomes at times confused, but the character of Gabriel Conroy is not by any means his worst creation, and the opening scene describing the castaways in the snow is in his very best manner." - Quinn, American Fiction, p. 239. Pattee considers GABRIEL CONROY to be "that chaotic book which has in it the materials for the greatest of American romances . the description of the snowstorm at the opening of GABRIEL CONROY reminds one of Thomas Hardy" (A History of American Literature Since 1870, pp. 69; 79). BAL 7285. Wright (III) 2539. Baird and Greenwood 1097. Leather rubbed at edges, 30 mm split at upper front joint, else a very good copy. Uncommon in this binding. (#107189).

Small quarto, nine lithographed cards enclosed in an original elaborately lithographed envelope. First printing of the first separate edition. Harte's poem first appeared as "Plain Language from Truthful James" in the September 1870 issue of the OVERLAND MONTHLY, an influential early California literary magazine edited by Harte. Born in Albany, N. Y., Francis Brett Harte (1838-1902), preeminently a man of the East, arrived in California in 1854 to join his widowed Mother who had moved there with a party of relatives and friends in 1853. In 1864, after a succession of jobs in Northern California: apothecary's assistant, teacher, private tutor, express messenger and typesetter, he moved to San Francisco where he "was connected with the GOLDEN ERA, first as a typesetter and later as an editor and contributor. In 1862 he was married. Two years later he was appointed Secretary of the California Mint, an office that allowed him abundant time for literary work. He was connected with Webb's brilliant and short-lived CALIFORNIAN, first as contributor and later as editor, and in 1868, when the OVERLAND MONTHLY, which was to be the ATLANTIC of Western America, was founded, he was made the editor. "The Luck of Roaring Camp" in the second number and "Plain Language from Truthful James" in the September, 1870, number, brought him a popularity that in suddenness and extent had had no precedent in America, save in the case of Mrs. Stowe and UNCLE TOM'S CABIN. The enormous applause intoxicated him; California became too narrow and provincial; and in 1871 he left it, joyous as one who is returning home after a long exile." - Pattee, A History of American Literature Since 1870, p. 67. BAL 7248 (printing 1). Merle Johnson, You Know These Lines!, pp. 71-75. First card a bit foxed, several cards cut slightly off center (as is usually the case; the cards were printed on a large sheet and then cut apart). The envelope is worn, foxed, missing its flap, and open on three sides. This set of cards is accompanied by another set of first printing cards, most of which are a bit tanned, which lacks the envelope. The set of cards with envelope is enclosed in a cloth folder and green crushed morocco slipcase which is worn at edges and has a faded spine panel. A classic of Western American literature. (#160995).

First edition. This famous collection of short stories includes the classic "The Luck of Roaring Camp," "M'liss" and "The Outcasts of Poker Flat." The correct first edition, without the story "Brown of Calaveras." "Though other authors have done greater work, few have had a more profound influence on American letters than Bret Harte . In a literary sense Harte's writings are historically among the most important of the local color school. In the larger sense he failed to report the forces which were developing the frontier. Yet despite his posturing and tendency to caricature, there was vitality in his method, and he was the first to create a type and form which, with timely modifications, have until recently dominated short story literature." - Fullerton, Selective Bibliography of American Literature 1775-1900, pp. 129-30. Grolier Club, One Hundred Influential American Books Printed Before 1900, no. 76. Powell, California Classics no. 7. Zamorano Eighty 40. BAL 7246. Wright (II) 1117.
