Back cover is lightly soiled and the spine has faded. Front hinge is cracked exposing the webbing but the text block is firm. The names of two previous owners are neatly penned on the ffe and one also on the page after the ffe. Otherwise the book is clean with smooth unmarked pages. Frontis in color. Profusely illustrated throughout in black and white. 222 pp.

The book has 222 pages with six pages of adverts many black and white illustrations by Richard Heighway. The book has an overall straight spine and sharp corners, with lightly softened spine ends. The boards are green with illustrations to the front boards and spine and gilt lettering. The boards, as you can see from the photos, are grubby from age and the spine is sunned. The pages are gilt edged but grubby however the interior text block is clean and bright if you overlook the off-white end papers. The copyright page confirms the Macmillan edition in 1901, preceded by the first edition in 1894.
