A wealth of unsuspected detail, never before unearthed, comes to life in these haunting images, subtly accompanied by Des Hickey's evocative text. -- The photographs highlight incidents and scenes hitherto disregarded, and illustrate the tenor of daily life in Dublin during Joyce's early life. Long-departed Dubliner's candidly return the reader's gaze as they bustle through busy streets or take their ease in spacious parks. Babies in perambulators, lords, ladies, servants, and professional classes, army officers, constabulary, and urchins are all to be found here, alongside monuments (subsequently blown up) and a wide choice of goods and services, from Zebra Grate Polish to High Class Artificial Teeth. This is the original first edition of this collection of the long-lost images by Robert French, exhumed by the late Kieran Hickey, and selected and enlarged in the manner of Antonioni. -- Kieran Hickey: a film director whose work includes "A Child's Voice", "Exposure" and "Criminal Conversation". He identified Robert French as the photographer of the Lawrence Collection and incorporated his researches on those photographs into his book "The Light of Other Days". Des Hickey: a journalist and broadcaster, co-author of six books.
