Softcover. Etat : Good. Re-issue. Herbert Hoover's place of birth was the American heartland; but for much of his life, he was a stranger to his native country, and never more so than while he was its president. His career followed a pattern familiar in the history of the United States - not quite the log cabin to the White House, but almost. Humble birth, hard work, the desire for achievement and finally, wealth, public service and the presidency formed a progression recognizable in much of the national experience. There was continuity with the past also in the values Hoover acquired in his youth and which stayed with him through life. The great crisis of Hoover's life was the depression, which ironically began soon after he took office in 1929. He then had to ask whether those values were still appropriate; and the answer he gave differed so markedly from that given by his countrymen that a gulf. opened between him and them that was never to be bridged in his lifetime. Perhaps because he felt that the burden of blame -for the depression thrust upon him was unfair, he remained out of step. In the years of the world's peril after 1939, he fought a lonely battle against the dominant opinion that the fate of the United States could not be detached from the fate of men elsewhere. He died unpopular and isolated -largely disavowed by his own party and embittered by the lack of understanding.
