Basane brune granitée, dos à nerfs orné, pièce de titre rouge, tranches marbrées, reliure restaurée, quelques lettres des notes marginales rognées par le couteau du relieur (reliure du XVIIe siècle). Édition originale très rare. Cet ouvrage d'exégèse du prédicateur Jean Hoffmeister, acteur majeur de la contre-réforme colmarienne, est suivi d'un sermon de Jean Chrysostome. Il est illustré d'un encadrement pour le titre, de la grande marque au phénix de Behem au verso, de quelques jolies lettrines gravées sur bois et d une seconde marque typographique au verso du dernier feuillet. Cette édition manque à la BnF ; cinq exemplaires sont répertoriés dans les bibliothèques françaises, à Avignon, Besançon, Colmar, Grasse et Strasbourg. Entré dans l'ordre des augustins à Colmar, Jean Hoffmeister (ou Hofmeister, Oberndorf, 1509 ou 1510-Günzbourg, 1547) suivit des études de théologie à Mayence et à Fribourg-en-Brisgau, puis revint à Colmar comme prieur en 1533. En 1543, il fut nommé provincial des augustins de la province rhéno-souabe et, en 1546, vicaire général de son ordre pour l'Allemagne. « Hoffmeister compte parmi les défenseurs les plus en vue de la foi catholique en Allemagne du sud. Sans trêve, il s'appliqua, par sa prédication et ses écrits, à restaurer l'Église dans ces régions et à réfuter les prises de position de la théologie réformée. En 1545, il prêcha pendant la diète d'empire à la cathédrale de Worms et, en 1546, sur la demande de Charles Quint, il prit part au second Colloque de Ratisbonne. Le général de l'ordre, Jérôme Seripando, regretta vivement l'absence d'Hoffmeister au concile de Trente ; il mourut en effet le 21 août 1547 à Günzbourg, sur le Danube » (Adolar Zumkeller). Ex-libris A. M. Pingold au premier contreplat et cachet d'une bibliothèque de la Congrégation du Très Saint Rédempteur sur le titre. D'après une note au crayon, ce volume proviendrait de la bibliothèque de Jacques Baillès (1798-1873), évêque de Luçon, censeur et critique littéraire.
