Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. This is the Fifth Printing of "Memories of Dean Hole" (Rev. Samuel Reynolds Hole , 1819 - 1904) issued for the American book trade by Macmillan & Co., who were acting for the original British publisher, Edward Arnold. Both publishers are noted on the title page, but it is Macmillan whose name is stamped on the spine. The book has a few lively cartoons by artist John Leech, who was a friend of Dean Hole. Rev. Hole was for many years Vicar of St. Andrew's Church in Caunton, Nottinghamshire. Later in his career he was also named as Dean of Rochester Cathedral. Hole was noted as an outstanding amateur horticulturist, with a particular genius with roses. He was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Victoria Medal of Honour. ************************************ Dean Hole had a genial sense of humor, some of it reflecting on his own self. He was close friends with William Makepeace Thackeray and cartoonist John Leech (a lifelong friend). He was also acquainted with a goodly number of other well-known public figures, among them Charles Dickens. This book consists of a number of chapters devoted to various interests and recollections. There is a full chapter on John Leech, and a considerable amount of material on authors Hole had known, including Thackeray (a close friend) and Dickens (Hole's esteem for Dickens was almost hagiographic!) There are chapters on his childhood, Artists, Gambling, the sport of Cricket, on shooting and hunting, a chapter or two on various fellow ecclesiastics (including opinions on Pusey and Cardinal Newman). Also discussed were Oxonians, preachers, archery, and, of course, Hole's lifelong activity and experimenting in Horticulture (Gardening). The book ends with a discussion about Working Men, for whom Hole made efforts to improve their lot. *************************************** It is a most genial book, full of life and wit from which one can obtain a delicious flavor of genteel middle class life in nineteenth century England. The book is grace with a handsome engraved portrait of Dean Hole, complete with a tissue guard (which has been toned considerably by the encroaching years). **************************************** TITLE : Memories of Dean Hole / AUTHOR : Dean Hole (Rev. Samuel Reynolds Hole, 1819 - 1904) / IMPRINT : Macmillan and Company / PLACE : New York / DATE : 1893 / EDITION : Fifth Printing / STATUS : Out ofPrint - OP / DETAILS : Hardcover Book, issued for the trade; Contains a frontispiece engraved portrait of Hole; there are several humorous sketches and cartoons (most by John Leech, and one by Thackeray); [xvi] + 331 pages; 4 3/4" x 7 1/4" (approximate 12mo); maroon cloth covered boards and spine; the surface of the cloth is a fine pebble texture; spine stamped with gilt lettering and two horizontal lines (head and foot); the front board has a small stamped gilt heraldic emblem (that of Dean Hole). ******************************** CONDITION VERY GOOD This is a previously owned book which remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are compressed and exhibit moderate abrasion - no fraying; gilt is bright and boards as well as spine maintain strong color; fore-edge corner tips are bumped with small splitting of cloth; bottom edges display mild shelf wear and a coupe of dents. the Text-block edges are age-toned, else clean. / BINDING : The book has obviously been read, but the binding remains solid with no detached or loose leaves. / INTERIOR : The end-papers are considerably foxed; an old decorative strip has been affixed to the top of the front free end-paper (rather pretty - it is likely have been so placed so as to cover some writing or blemish); foxing continues throughout without being so obvious as that on the end-papers; There is scattered small smudging and toning of paper, and some mild surface creasing; the interior is unmarked : no writing, no underlining, no marginalia.
