With the binder's label of Henry Sotheran & Co. to the verso of the front free end paper.A collection of 30 subversive and satirical short stories by renowned French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), created to resemble Boccaccio's Decameron. The tales are separated into three sections, and include La Belle Impéria, Les trois Clercs de Saint-Nicholas, and Persévérance d'amour. This fifth edition - the first illustrated edition - is accompanied by 425 vignettes and woodcuts by Gustave Doré (1832-1883), and was considered to be Doré's masterpiece. A variety of engravers, such as Lavieille, Rouget, Pisan, Brévière and Piaud, engraved Doré's illustrations for this work. Bookplate to the front paste down. In a full morocco binding. Externally very smart, with some fading to spine and a little shelf wear to the boards and extremities. Gilt remains bright. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright but spotted throughout, with some age toning to the first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed. book.
