Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First UK edition. Dust jacket complete, unclipped, slightly rubbed to edges. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. Endpapers map of the lands of the times of Jesus--Judea, Samaria, The Mediterramean Sea. Title page illustration: The Flight from Bethlehem, detail from the Buxtehude Altar, Hamburg, painted on wood by Master Bertram in the late 14th century. Numerous illustrations in b/w and colour. 207 pages clean and tight. What do we know of the early life of Christ? It is a period on which the Bible is, for the most part, mysteriously silent. But other sources exist, some of them contemporary with the Gospels themselves, which purport to describe in some detail Jesus' forbears and family, and the events and circumstances of his childhood. These apocryphal tales were known over large and unrelated areas of the ancient world - as in the Gospels themselves, works attributed to the same author and describing very similar incidents can be traced to widely different locations. These writings were pronounced heretical at an early date and have sunk into obscurity today. However, they formed part of the texture of Christian belief throughout the Middle Ages and were reflected in a multitude of mediaeval and early Renaissance works of art. There has hitherto been very little examination of mediaeval artifacts as iconographic reflections of the ideas and beliefs of the time, and in their social context. THE CHILD JESUS is a balanced presentation of this art and of the stories of Christ's ancestors, birth and childhood, and of the curious way in which the story was developed by the mediaeval Carmelites, on whom very little has ever been published in the English language. Adey Horton has spent many years investigating his subject, and the result is a readable, scholarly and thoughtful study of this fascinating area of research, illustrated with a remarkable selection of reproductions. Of the greatest interest to the general reader, it will be an invaluable source for the art historian, or for anyone who wishes to make a more informed study of mediaeval Christian works of art, in so many of which references to the apocryphal tales occur. Above all, in showing how the apocryphal heritage of the New Testament was passed down and interpreted by succeeding generations, it throws a new light upon the history and development of Christian thought and belief, and will provide information and material for reflection for those involved or interested in any aspect of religion or religious study. Size: Sm 4to.
