Hardcover. Etat : Good. Original blindstamped cloth publisher's binding. Some foxing and general age toning to text blocks, but most text clean and free from foxing. This book includes 4 separate works, each with its own title page and each published by Carey and Hart, Philadelphia with an 1843 publication date: "The Rural & Domestic Life of Germany with Characteristic sketches of its cities and scenery" by William Howitt printed in double columns (197 p.); "The Military Operations at Cabul which ended in the retreat and destruction of the British army, January 1842" & "Rough Notes of the Imprisonment in Afghanistan" by Vincent Eyer (80 p.) ; "Cabool: a Personal Narrative of a Journey to and a residence in that city in the years 1836, 7 and 8" by Sir Alexander Burnes (96 pages); "The Last Year in China to the Peace of Nanking" by A Field Officer (64 p.). This compilation of works appears to be a response to Americans' desire to know more about foreign lands, in particular China and Afghanistan. Covers are fair but tight and complete & all hinges tight as well. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
