Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. The sole UK printing published by The Gehenna Press, UK in 1981. Number '120' of only 250 copies issued. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just a tiny amount of rubbing and a very small split to the extreme spine tips. Free from inscriptions and erasures. 'The woodcuts were printed from the blocks ; the paper is Dover, handmade at Maidstone, Kent, these copies are signed by the poet and artist and are numbered one to two hundred and twenty five.'. Leonard Baskin has provided five full page B/W woodcuts, a further one hand coloured and a further half page bird decoration to the limitation page. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. Loosely inserted are the 4 page publisher's Prospectus with a B/W woodcut and also a a very scarce promotional letter from Mark Ritchie at The Phaidon Press promoting this title and informing collectors that they had taken over the ownership of The Gehenna Press. An increasingly elusive copy of one of the most handsome books that Hughes and Baskin worked on together. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Author(s).

[39] pp., 11 etchings, 9 printed in color, all signed and numbered in pencil by Baskin. Housed in original gray cloth tray case, with blue-gray paste-paper affixed to spine and edges, black leather lettering at spine, edged in red. CONDITION: Near fine. First edition, limited to 110 copies, of this sequence of "stray poems" from a larger series Hughes wrote on the subject of his wife, Sylvia Plath, most of which were published in his Birthday Poems. Signed by Hughes and Baskin. From the colophon: "One hundred & ten copies of Howls & Whispers were printed at The Gehenna Press during the promising Spring of 1998. The paper was handmade in Italy. The letterpress in Centaur types was achieved by Arthur Larson of Hadley, Mass. The etchings were printed in color from copperplates by Michael Kutch. The book has been bound by Claudia Cohen of Easthampton, Mass. Copies numbered 1-10 comprise the deluxe edition & contain three water-color drawings by Leonard Baskin, a second suite of the etchings (the ones originally printed in black are hand-touched in color by Baskin), one copperplate & a leaf of Ted Hughes' manuscript. Copies numbered 11-110 constitute the regular edition. This is copy number 103.".
