Composed in Leigh Hunt's twilight years, and first published in Household Words between 1853 an 1854, this is a topographical tour of old Kensington, before its transformation into Museum Land.

First edition thus. xvii, 211pp., a frontispiece portrait, 22 full-page plates and 33 other portraits and drawings in volume 1; ix, 208pp., 20 full-page plates and 32 other drawings and portraits in volume 2. Both volumes have decorated endpapers. James Henry Leigh Hunt (1784-1859), best known as Leigh Hunt, was an English critic, essayist, poet, and writer. He lived for several years in Kensington, London, and his 'Old Court Suburb', first published in 1855, provides a fascinating account and description of Kensington and its residents in the middle of the 19th century. The edition for sale has been edited and with an introduction by Austin Dobson and is beautifully illustrated by Herbert Railston, Claude Shepperton, and Edmund J. Sullivan, and printed to a high quality by The Riverside Press, Edinburgh. Published in a limited edition of 150 copies, volume 1 has been signed by all three illustrators, but the two volumes for sale have not been numbered. The books are bound in the original red cloth covered boards with paper labels on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and a stain on the front board of volume 2. The spines are faded and there is also slight fading to the adjacent parts of the boards. The title labels are worn with pieces missing. The contents are tight and clean with an inscription on both front free endpapers.PLEASE NOTE: Heavy books so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers. SIGNED By the Artists.
