H G Well's classic work on biology, written with his zoologist son and his former biology tutor has been described as 'the best popular introduction to the biological sciences'. It is notable for its introduction of modern ecological concepts. Originally serialised in 31 fortnightly parts, the first book edition of three volumes was published between 1929 and 1930; a single volume edition was issued in 1931.
