Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Ichac, Marcel (illustrateur). Book Club Edition. Annapurna was the first 8000-meter mountain to be climbed. But Maurice Herzog's French Alpine Club team paid a terrible price for their great feat. The story of their descent from the summit is one of the great narratives in all mountaineering literature. This is the most widely-read and influential mountaineering book ever published. First published in 1952, this copy has the introduction by Eric Shipton. 19 illustrations both in color and monochrome-gravure, 5 maps. Hardcover has grey leatherette boards, blue lettering & designs on front cover & spine, but no DJ. Prior owner ex-libris sticker in front end-papers. Top page-edge is tinted green. Interior is tight, clean & unmarked. Since it has fewer photos and no fold-out maps in the rear of the book, suspect BCE edition Copyright 1952. Not ex-public library. No edition/printing info. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Annapurna I is the name given to the 8,100-meter mountain that ranks among the most forbidding in the Himalayan chain. Dangerous not just for its extreme height but for a long and treacherous approach, its summit proved unreachable until 1950, when a group of French mountaineers made a mad dash for its peak. They became the first men to accomplish the feat, doing so without oxygen tanks or any of the modern equipment that contemporary climbers use. The adventure nearly cost them their lives.(Publisher).
