Etat : VG. Frontis drawing Coleridge (illustrateur). If you wish to know Coleridge well you must read what some of his contempories of his life have said about him: Wordsworth, Lamb, Hazlitt, De Quincey. He was a wonderful boy from childhood. His father was a clergyman living in Devonshire and master of the boys' school of the parish. Samuel, the youngest of 13 children, was born Dec. 6, 1772, and so was about of an age with Scott, Wordsworth, Southey and Lamb. Four of these boys born in different parts of England were later to come to come together as intimate friends and two of them would affect the course of English poetry. By the time he was six, he was well read in fairy and knighthood lore and used, like Don Quixote, to go out to slay false knights in the shape of tall thistles, with a trusty walking stick. When he was nine his father died. Nevertheless he went to Bluecoat School. We can easily put Coleridge in the pulpit for, before he left Christ's Hospital at 19, he had become noted among his fellows as a philosopher and theologian. After his death, Lamb wrote when I heard of his death it was without grief. It seemed to be that he had long been in the confines of the next world. Old time calling card enclosed, owner name front endpaper.
