Printed cardstock covers. Etat : Very good. First Edition. The first issue of this literary magazine formed in response to the censoring of William Burroughs' "Naked Lunch" and any work from Jack Kerouac. Editor Rosenthal was told not to publish Burroughs or Kerouac in the upcoming winter issue of "The Chicago Review" a literary publication from the University of Chicago. With help from Alan Ginsberg, and Gregory Corso who both promised financial and promotional aid, "Big Table" was started. THIS COPY IS SIGNED BY ALAN GINSBERG, GREGORY CORSO AND PETER ORLOVSKY. The signatures were obtained while the trio were likely on a promotional reading tour for the new publication at Harvard University March 26,1959. Ginsberg writes below his signature "salesman". "During the course of the question period which followed the reading, Mr. Ginsberg and Mr. Corso entertained the audience with some amusing observations on the "beat generation." Mr. Ginsberg allowed as how he thought "being called a beatnik is a real drag: I'm a poet;" and called spontaneity the foundation of his work--"Writing poetry is like going to the bathroom." No writer attributed, Harvard Crimson, March 27, 1959 Original mail order card loosely inserted. A small hand typed and signed note (inserted) from the person who acquired the signatures states they were obtained at the Lowell Lecture Hall in the spring of 1959 and that he attended with Valerie Shaw.

Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. Digest Size, wraps. 158(4)pp. Sharp First Issue of this periodical of beat literature founded by Rosenthal and born out of academic censorship by the University of Chicago. This first volume includes the first ten episodes from Burroughs' Naked Lunch, predating the release of the book. Square, tight and clean throughout with very mild edge-wear and just a hint of toning. Still bright with no chipping, creases or tears. Signed and inscribed by Burroughs on the first page of his contribution, "For Roger Richards, William S. Burroughs. Hotel Chelsea, N.Y.C. October 15". Roger Richards was the owner of the iconic Greenwich Books and The Rare Book Room in Greenwich Village and a close associate of Burroughs and several other Beat writers. The story goes, and this directly from the third party involved, is that Rogers was supposed to have this book inscribed to one of his good clients along with a few other Burroughs pieces. However, when Richards arrived at the Chelsea Hotel, where Burroughs was living at the time, they decided to get stoned and Burroughs ended up inscribing it to Rogers instead of the client. The client was still happy to receive it in addition to the couple of piece that Burroughs did manage to inscribe to him. Laid in is a 16-page catalog from The Rare Book Room from 1986, (the good ol' days when a Very Fine first of The Old Man and the Sea could be had for $250), which was addressed to the above "client", though his name has been blacked-out for privacy as he is still very much alive. A very pretty collectable copy and a neat association. Signed copies of this digest are very uncommon.

Soft cover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. Big Table, Chicago, 1959. Condition: Good. First Edition. Small 8vo. Printed wraps. [152]pp.: Excellent previous ownership copy belonging to Frank O'Hara, signed by O'Hara to the first page in black ink and dated "New York, 1959". Additionally signed by O'Hara in pencil to the cover. The inaugural issue of Big Table offers "the complete contents of the suppressed winter 1959 Chicago Review. After the administration at University of Chicago Press would not allow contributions by William S. Burroughs or Jack Kerouac in the Chicago Review, editor Irving Rosenthal resigned and launched Big Table. Features the first ten episodes from Burroughs landscape altering Naked Lunch, thus, its first printing in any form. 400 copies of the magazine, mailed to subscribers, were seized and impounded by the Chicago Post Office, deemed obscene and filthy it has no redeeming value. Editor Rosenthal sued the Post Office in the District Court of Chicago, where Judge Julius Hoffman ruled it not obscene. Printed in an unusually large run of 10,000 copies, Big Table served as a proving ground for Burroughs and others. Maurice Girodias of the Olympia Press took notice and gambled that if Burroughs, Kerouac, et al could be printed in an edition of that size, it was worth attempting a publication of 5,000 copies of Naked Lunch, which he would do promptly the same year. A more intriguing copy can hardly be imagined, as poet O'Hara had a taut, at best, relationship with Kerouac. A notorious 1959 poetry reading at the Living Theatre in New York saw Kerouac drunkenly heckle O'Hara with the line "you are ruining American poetry, O Hara", while O'Hara clapped back "that's more than you ever did for it". Big Table issue number one stands as a landmark publication and snapshot of a literary world turning on its axis as the 50's faded into the 60's. In Good condition with some water staining to the front cover, which affects the top and bottom page block, but does affect the interior pages. Typical age toning throughout and extremely light edge wear, with definite creasing to the spine. Binding has become loose, leaving glue residue on the first page, but is still very much intact. All said, a sound copy of an important publication with a better previous ownership hardly imaginable.
