Hardcover first edition - First printing. Book by the African American anthropologist best known as the author 'Drylongso.' Unlike that book, which focused on the black American experience, this includes conversations with Americans of all races and all walks of life, involved in many forms of dissent from a Unitarian minister in Massachusetts who sets up a chapter of Sanctuary to a white woman bus driver who drove the whole busload of pot-smoking teenagers to the police station to a woman trying to uncover the truth of her father's death after he had been subjected by the Army to unauthorized chemical experiments. Photographs. 321 pp. Fine in near fine dust jacket (dj folds slightly offcenter.).

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Jacket by John Dyer (illustrateur). 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Some slight edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of largely purple jacket and spine, tiny scratch to bottom front jacket, corners rubbed with small loss, some faint time staining to back jacket, slight backwards lean, not price clipped (27s 6d), no inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy for its age, in bright unfaded jacket. 384pp. Pitt Conrad is at once a popular and suspect character in the township of Morning Shade in the Mississippi Delta (the year is 1926), popular as a dashing young gambler with a Midas touch which has enabled him to buy back his grandfather's plantation, suspect because the man who looks after his money is his black servant and because he is friendly too with his father's butler Moses, who has looked after him as a child. Pitt hates the way the negroes are treated. It is Moses' disappearance that arouses fear in Morning Shade that trouble is afoot and it is in a secret rendezvous with Moses that Pitt learns of plans to dynamite the town. The insurrection breaks out, and almost single handed Pitt suppresses it. Then the Klan takes over and the whites take terrible revenge. The climax comes with the trial of Moses, and with Pitt's agonized refusal to allow him the means of suicide. To the applause of 90% of the white population Moses is hanged in the market square. By Arkansas writer Francis Irby Gwaltney (1921-81).
