Biography of the Civil War general, being "A graphic history of his career in war and peace; his romantic youth; his stern and patriotic manhood; his calm and beautiful old age; a marvellous march from the mountains of time to the sea of eternity." This is a FIRST EDITION from 1891, in 607 pages, with numerous maps & illustrations throughout; frontispiece of Sherman, with tissue guard intact, but tearing. Hardcover octavo has mustard-colored cloth over boards with black embossed design & lettering to front & spine (which is heavily faded). Condition is Good: text block is securely stitched, but both hinges are cracked, endpapers split, boards fragile. Pages moderately tanned, heavier around edges, commensurate with age. A salesman's dummy or canvassing book, consisting of sixty-nine pagesfrom a 607-page biography of Sherman, with an illustration from a photograph of the sixty-eight year old general, a preface, Chapters One to Five, half of Chapter Ten, an electro-tint portrait of Major-General Scholfield, an engraving of Sherman's birthplace, images printed by Levytype Co of Admiral David D. Porter and a New York City funeral procession down Broadway, and binding samples. A collaborative venture between Sherman's military comrade Howard and historian Johnson to depict the controversial Sherman's life and career in a sympathetic light. CONDITION: Good, rubbed, loss to lower right corner of front free endpaper, offsetting from binding sample to rear endpaper, occasional foxing.
