This is a handsome reprint in a trade paperback format of Jean Giono's novel "Le Bonheur fou", here translated by Phyllis Johnson as "The Straw Man" . This novel is a sequel of sorts to "The Horseman on the Roof" ("Le Hussard sur le toit"). In the earlier novel the protagonist, Angelo Pardi, a romantic dreamer, suffers through the cholera epidemic in Provence whilst trying to fulfill his quest for happiness. This was in 1832.
