"Kwaidan ("ghost story"), is a book by Lafcadio Hearn that features several Japanese ghost stories. Hearn declares in his introduction to the first edition of the book, which he wrote on January 20, 1904, shortly before his death, that most of these stories were translated from old Japanese texts. He also states that one of the stories - Yuki-onna - was told to him by a farmer in Musashi Province, and his was apparently the first record of it, both by his own account and according to the research of modern folklorists." Presumed first edition w/SD & NAP, hardcover in full dark green cloth with gilt stamped titling to the spine and a dark top edge treatment, the rear hinge is cracked but solid, the book has moderate bumps to the spine ends and cover corners, slight sunning to the spine, some rubbing with a few faint spots and smudges to the covers, and minor foxing starting to the edges of the text block, otherwise a solid, tight Near Very Good copy.

Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy, bound in an olive-green linen cloth, with unbruised tips, neat and tidy paste-downs; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining. Stamped silver lettering to spine and with gorgeous little bamboo flourishes there, too. Top-stained handsomely in blue. Six faint marks of tape residue along spine edges and covers. Dealer stamp, neatly affixed at front free endsheet, another at title page, and tariff sheet affixed at rear endpaper. Extensive (and helpful!) pencil marginalia on the contents pages, noting the dates of original publication). Age-toning to text. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, showing moderate wear and multiple tape repairs backing the closed tears and some chipping to edges, with toning to spine and creasing thereof at bottom. "Koizumi Yakumo," Britain-born Patrick Lafcadio Hearn in 1850 of Greek-Irish descent, was a writer who worked in the United States for several newspapers before moving to Japan and in essence becoming Japanese, dying there in 1904. Remarkably well-versed in Japanese culture, especially its myths and legends, these collected articles include musings about Islam and Hinduism, Buddhism, religion, slavery, Confucianism, and militarism, collected by Mr. Albert Mordell. viii + 260 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Hardcover. First edition. 319pp. Duodecimo [19.5 cm] Olive green cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title and bamboo design on the spine. Very good. The spine is heavily rolled, and the spine ends and corners of the covers are gently bumped. There is a bookseller's tiny label on the front free endsheet. There is a 1 inch long closed tear at the head of the title page. The dust jacket is in very good condition, with very light soiling. The spine of the jacket is subtly faded. The edges are a little chipped, and have a couple of small closed tears. There is a faint erased pencil notation on the front inside flap. Includes essays and sketches written while Lafcadio Hearn wrote for the Cincinnati and New Orleans newspapers.
