Paperback. Etat : Fine. v, 185 pages, illustrations (some colour); 26 cm. Tight, clean copy. "For almost ten years, Samuel Mockbee, a recent MacArthur Grant recipient, and his architecture students at Auburn University have been designing and building striking houses and community buildings for impoverished residents of Alabama's Hale County. Using salvaged lumber and bricks, discarded tires, hay and waste cardboard bales, concrete rubble, colored bottles, and old license plates, they create inexpensive buildings that bear the trademark of Mockbee's work, which he describes as 'contemporary modernism grounded in Southern culture.' In a time of unexampled prosperity, when architectural attention focuses on big, glossy urban projects, the Rural Studio provides an alternative of substance. In addition to being a social welfare venture, the Rural Studio--'Taliesin South' as Mockbee calls it--is also an educational experiment and a prod to the architectural profession to act on its best instincts. In giving students hands-on experience in designing and building something real, it extends their education beyond paper architecture. And in scavenging and reusing a variety of unusual materials, it is a model of sustainable architecture. The work of Rural Studio has struck such a chord-both architecturally and socially--that it has been featured on Oprah, Nightline, and CBS News, as well as in Time and People magazines. The Studio has completed more than a dozen projects, including the Bryant 'Hay Bale' House, Harris 'Butterfly' House, Yancey Chapel, Akron Chapel, Children's Center, H.E.R.O. Playground, Lewis House, Super Sheds and Pods, Spencer House addition, Farmer's Market, Mason's Bend Community Center, Goat House, and Shannon-Dutley House. These buildings, along with the incredible story of the Rural Studio, the people who live there, and Mockbee and his student architects, are detailed in this colorful book, the first on the subject. 'I tell my students, it's got to be warm, dry, and noble'--Samuel Mockbee. / Andrea Oppenheimer Dean is former Executive Editor of Architecture Magazine and a published author. She lives in Washington, D.C." - Publisher. Size: 4to.

Paperback. Etat : Original pictorial wraps. First Printing of the First Edition. New York and London: New York University Press, 1998. 5.5" wide by 8" tall. Trade paperback. As New condition. No store stamp, owner's name or bookplate. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Bright, shiny, clean, square, and tight. Flat spine. No creases. Fresh and crisp, obviously never read. First printing, with complete number row (10 987654321) on the copyright page. From the rear cover: "The past decade has seen an extraordinary outpouring of research, writing, and talk about lesbian and gay sexuality, triggered in part by the confluence of the AIDS epidemic, the feminist sex wars, and the development of queer studies. Yet many lesbian and gay writers and readers have been frustrated by recurring gaps and absences in the queer studies approach to sexuality, as well as by the limitations of explicit queer community discourse around sex. OPPOSITE SEX brings the sex back into queer studies, making real bodies, acts, and desires central to analysis of the complex relationships between male and female homosexualities and their impact on lesbian and gay culture. The contributors to this volume -- scholars, artists, activists, and journalists -- address the many ways in which lesbian and gay men are viewed and implicated in each other's sexual realities. OPPOSITE SEX includes writing by lesbians and gay men about each other's bodies, interpretations of different male and female homosexual sex cultures, and reflections on the history, sociology, and politics of changing discourses around queer sexuality. Passionate and challenging, this anthology shows the rich and complex forms through which individuals and communities make meaning from their quotidian sexual impulses, their utopian sexual mores, and their idiosyncratic sexual acts. Contributors include Roberto Bedoya, Kaucylia Brooke, Lawrence Chua, Linnea Due, Sandra Lee Golvin, Jewelle Gomez, Francisco J. Gonzalez, Della Grace, Amber Hollibaugh, Robert Jensen, Kate Kane, Elizabeth A. Kelly, Monica Majoli, Mimi McGurl, Robert Reid-Pharr, Gayle Rubin, Lawrence Schimel, Richard Schimpf, and Susan Stryker.". First Printing of the First Edition. Soft Cover. Hardcover. Etat : Sehr gut. Etat de la jaquette : Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 208 Pages, 216 Ills. Clothbound 29 x 29 cm - In her large-format paintings and drawings, Mehretu adds computer-generated architectural drawings, (urban) plans, gestural symbols, and colorful, geometric shapes to multilayered, futuristic visual worlds, where historical and fictional landscapes meet. The artist makes uses of different sources, making allusions to the geometric abstractions of Kazimir Malevich or Vasily Kandinsky, and referring to graffiti painting and comic strips, to press photos of riots and uprisings. In this way, Mehretu succeeds in creating her own form of the image that reflects its era.
